CareerBuilder – Uniquely Affiliated with Newspapers

CareerBuilder has an Alexa rating of 197, which makes it the fourth most popular site, behind Yahoo, Craig's List and Monster. It claims to have over 20 million resumes.

CareerBuilder is partnered with the newspaper chains Gannett, Knight Ridder and Tribune, so it includes job listings from those newspapers. This means you may find some jobs here that don't appear on other job listing sites, especially if they are in a major metropolitan area for those newspapers. As a result, many reviewers consider this one of the best job sites.

The site has a large number of listings in many categories with brief descriptions. One thing to be cautious of is the large number of work-at-home opportunities that are present. Many of these are not real jobs.

Because of it's newspaper affiliations, CareerBuilder is especially good for local job listings. As a hiring manager, I like this and will be particularly inclined to use this site if I specifically want local job applicants.

The price to post a job ($389 currently) is comparable to Monster, so it's pretty much a toss-up. As a job seeker, you should always check both.

For job seekers, one advantage CareerBuilder has over Monster is that you don't have to register to post a resume, look for jobs, or use their other services.

PROS

  • A clean and easy to navigate interface
  • You don't have to register to use any of the services
  • Good supply of job listings
  • Has a "matching" engine that will find jobs similar to the ones you apply for
  • Affiliated with over 130 newspapers, which means lots of local job listings

CONS

  • Watch out for the many work-at-home job postings
  • Some of the resources offered are actually advertisements for fee based companies
  • Sometimes the listings appear in the wrong categories
